Levees: Depositional Landform

Formation:

  1. Levees are natural, raised embankments formed as a river overflows its banks.

  2. During a flood material is deposited across the flood plain, as there is a reduction in velocity and energy due to increased friction.

  3. The heaviest material is deposited first, close to the river channel.

  4. Over time, this material increases on the river bank to form a levee.
